Creating a “Completely Controlled Plant Factory” where Plants Grow Upside Down

Objective of project

To develop a method to grow plants efficiently by controlling the affecting conditions.
The plant factory that the present study develops cultivates plants upside down, a method that has not been employed by existing plant factories.

Plant factories are advantageous in that they satisfy the requirements imposed by modern Japanese society: stable production, without being affected by the unstable climate; safe products, without the need of applying pesticide; and adaptability to urban Smart Electronic environments, with flexibility in their size and shape. Without the need for human intervention, it can ease problems caused by the dwindling and aging farming population.
The most remarkable feature of the plant factory that we propose is that it cultivates plants upside down. No existing plant factories employ such a method.
The outcome of our research will allow us to grow more plants with less energy.
Then, we can propose a new growing method in plant factories which can partly solve the agricultural crisis.
