Constructing growth environment monitoring system

Objective of project

To shorten the cultivation period and to increase the sugar content of red-leaf lettuce compared to those cultivated with the current techniques. In the plant factory the present study proposes, red-leaf lettuce is cultivated in a water tank, which can overcome various problems concerning food production in a plant factory.

The food problem is a pressing issue of the world due to the population growth. It is said that as of 2050, 1.55 times as much food production as 2000 will be required.  We developed a plant factory in which red-leaf lettuce is cultivated in a water tank. Besides, we built a system which enables personal smartphones to monitor the cultivation. The system will make the control of the environment in the plant factory easier. In this research, we approach this issue by developing new cultivation methods that utilize information technology in optimizing and monitoring the cultivating condition.
